Natural horsemanship is more than just riding — it is a philosophy and code of ethics for how we engage with horses in all aspects of their lives, from their daily care and well-being to their jobs as our partners in play and in competition.
One excellent way to learn natural horsemanship “from the ground up” is to participate in the hands-on care of horses and the environment they live in.
The Equine Partners, Inc. Working Student program provides opportunities for horse lovers to participate in the day-to-day running of the ranch. Working students interact with more than a dozen horses (and two miniature donkeys), gaining experience with different equine personalities while building confidence, communication, and leadership skills.
We emphasize putting the relationship first and taking the time it takes (so it takes less time!), whether feeding, cleaning pens, or bringing a horse up to the barn for the vet. Our working students learn horse-keeping from a natural perspective that respects equine psychology and priorities and results in happy, confident, contented horses.
Compensation is in the form of credit for lessons or horse development.
Preference is given to Parelli students (any level). Must be at least 20 years old and have reliable transportation.
The standard to-do list for the working student includes feeding, watering, and cleaning pens. Other duties vary to give students a chance to be involved in all aspects of professional ranch management. The working student program includes a morning shift and an evening shift, two days per week. Each shift takes about three hours.
